Picking the right settings
"Counts as silence below" is the level under which audio is treated as a pause. -40 dB works for a decent microphone in a quiet room. If breaths and room noise are being kept, try -30 dB; if quiet word endings are being cut, try -50 dB.
"Cut pauses longer than" decides which pauses are touched. 0.5 s removes hesitations while keeping the rhythm of speech; 0.3 s gives the tight, fast pace of short-form voiceovers; 1 or 2 s only removes long gaps.
"Pause to leave in" is how long each shortened pause becomes. Removing pauses entirely makes speech sound unnatural; 0.2 s is a good middle ground. This tool works on audio files; to tighten a video, extract its audio first or cut it in an editor.
