How to Turn a Canva Project to Black and White

Turn every element in a Canva design to black and white in one step with a grayscale color palette, or print a grayscale PDF if you only need a flat copy.

Filtering each element one at a time is slow, and Canva doesn't need it. A grayscale color palette recolors every selected element in one click, and you can apply it to all pages at once.

Apply a black and white palette to every selected element

A color palette changes the colors of everything you select, so one pick converts the whole page. Your design stays editable this way.

  1. Open your project and go to the page you want to convert.
  2. Click an empty spot on the canvas, then press Ctrl+A (Cmd+A on Mac) to select every element on the page.
  3. Open the Styles panel from the left sidebar.
  4. Choose the Black and white or Greyscale palette from the list. All selected elements switch to black and white.
  5. To convert every page, click Apply to all pages at the bottom of the palette list. Without it, the change only applies to the page you have open.

If you only need a black and white file

If you don't need to edit the copy afterward, you can print the design to a grayscale PDF. This flattens the design into a single file, so you can't change it later.

  1. Click Share, then Download to save your design to your computer.
  2. Open the downloaded file and press Ctrl+P (Cmd+P on Mac) to open the print dialog.
  3. Choose Save as PDF as the destination.
  4. Open the color setting and choose Greyscale.
  5. Click Save and pick a location for the file.

FAQ

Will the black and white version still be editable?

Yes, if you use the color palette on the original project. Exporting a PDF gives you a flat file that you can't edit, so only use that route for a final copy.

Do I have to do this on every page?

No. Click Apply to all pages at the bottom of the color palette list to convert every page in one step.
