Install CapCut on your D drive on Windows by changing where new apps save, then reinstalling from the Microsoft Store. A junction link covers the standalone installer.

On Windows, the standalone CapCut installer often ignores the install location and puts the app on C:, with the location button greyed out. The easiest fix is to change where new apps save in Windows Settings, then install CapCut from the Microsoft Store.

Install CapCut on D drive from the Microsoft Store

Windows saves Store apps to the drive you choose in Settings, so set that first.

  1. Open Settings and go to System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Where new content is saved.
  2. Next to New apps will save to, select your D drive instead of This Device (C:).
  3. If CapCut is already installed, uninstall it first.
  4. Open the Microsoft Store, search for CapCut, and install it again.

CapCut now installs to D:. The same setting applies to other Store apps you install later.

If you must use the standalone installer, install it normally, then move the app folder to D: and create a junction. The junction makes Windows look for CapCut on C: while the files sit on D:.

  1. Install CapCut with the standalone installer. It goes to the default folder, such as C:\Program Files\CapCut.
  2. Move the whole CapCut folder to your D drive, for example D:\CapCut. Nothing should be left at the original C: path.
  3. Open Command Prompt as administrator. Search for "cmd", right-click it, and select Run as administrator.
  4. Run this command, using your own paths: mklink /J "C:\Program Files\CapCut" "D:\CapCut"
  5. Open CapCut to check that it launches.

Replace the example paths with your actual install and target folders. This method takes more steps than the Store method, so use it only if the Store version doesn't work for you.

Move only the project data if you just need C: space

If your real goal is to stop C: from filling up, you don't need to move the app at all. Leave CapCut on C: and move the data it creates instead.

  1. Open CapCut's settings.
  2. Change Cache Location and Project Save Location to a folder on your D drive.

This keeps the program on C: but stops your projects and cache from filling it up while you edit.

FAQ

Why does the CapCut installer ignore the drive I pick?

The standard Windows installer often forces the install onto the system drive and disables the location button. Installing from the Microsoft Store after changing the save location avoids this.

Do I need a junction link if I only want to save space?

No. Change the Cache Location and Project Save Location in CapCut's settings to your D drive, and the program stays on C: while your projects and cache move.
