When you cut a clip in Premiere Pro, the keyframes in Effect Controls can disappear from view, making it hard to find and adjust them. The fix is to turn on Pin to Clip in the Effect Controls panel so keyframes stay visible no matter how you trim the clip.
Pin keyframes to the clip in Effect Controls
- Select the clip on your timeline that has keyframes applied.
- Open the Effect Controls panel (Window > Effect Controls if it's not visible).
- Locate the Pin to Clip button at the top of the panel, it looks like a pushpin icon next to the clip name.
- Click Pin to Clip to enable it. The icon will highlight.
- Now cut or trim the clip on the timeline. The keyframes remain pinned to the visible portion of the clip in Effect Controls, so you can always see and edit them.
This works on both Windows and Mac. It's especially useful when you're animating position, scale, opacity, or any effect over time and need to make multiple cuts to the same clip.
Use keyboard shortcuts to open Effect Controls faster
- Press Shift + 5 (Windows) or Shift + 5 (Mac) to jump straight to the Effect Controls panel.
- With the clip selected, the panel shows its effects and keyframes immediately, no menu hunting required.
Organize your project panel with bins before you start editing
- In the Project panel, right-click and choose New Bin (or press Ctrl + / on Windows, Cmd + / on Mac).
- Name bins for footage, audio, graphics, sequences, and exports.
- Drag imported assets into the matching bins right after import.
- Use the List View in the Project panel to sort by name, frame rate, or duration, click any column header to sort.
A clean project panel lets you find clips in seconds, not minutes, and keeps relinking painless if you move media folders later.
Set default audio track types to speed up mixing
- Right-click an empty area of the audio track headers in the timeline and choose Customize Audio Header.
- Drag Track Type into the header row if it's not already there.
- Click the track type dropdown on each audio track and set it to Standard, Music, Dialogue, or Ambience based on what that track holds.
- Open the Essential Sound panel (Window > Essential Sound). With a clip selected, click its assigned track type, Premiere applies loudness, repair, and clarity settings automatically.
This works on Premiere Pro 2023 and later. It saves you from manually adjusting gain, noise reduction, and ducking on every single clip.
Map custom shortcuts for your most-used commands
- Open Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts (or press Ctrl + Alt + K / Cmd + Opt + K).
- Search for commands you use constantly, "Add Edit," "Ripple Delete," "Toggle Pin to Clip," "Toggle Animation."
- Click in the Shortcut column and press the key combo you want. Avoid conflicts with existing shortcuts.
- Click OK. Your custom shortcuts work immediately.
Save the preset with a name like "My Editing" so you can restore it on another machine or after a reset.
